Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about gaming performance and internet speed.

Why is my ping high even with fast internet?

Ping (latency) determines how long it takes for data to travel to the game server and back. High speed (bandwidth) doesn't guarantee low ping. Distance to server, Wi-Fi interference, and network congestion are common causes.

What is a good ping for gaming?

Generally: under 20ms is excellent, 20-50ms is good, 50-100ms is playable, and over 100ms will cause noticeable lag in competitive games.

How can I lower my ping?

Use an Ethernet cable instead of Wi-Fi, close background apps using bandwidth, choose game servers closer to your location, and consider a gaming-optimized router.

What is jitter?

Jitter is the variation in your ping over time. High jitter causes fast/slow motion (rubber-banding) and is often worse for gaming than a stable but slightly higher ping.

Does a gaming VPN reduce lag?

Sometimes. Services like ExitLag can optimize the route your data takes to the game server, potentially lowering ping if your ISP's routing is inefficient.

What is packet loss?

Packet loss occurs when data packets fail to reach their destination. In gaming, this looks like stuttering, freezing, or characters teleporting.

Does an SSD reduce lag or ping?

No. An SSD makes games load and install faster, but it has no effect on ping, jitter, or packet loss — those are determined by the network between you and the game server. The quick way to tell them apart: if you sit on long load screens but play smoothly once you're in, that's storage. If gameplay stutters or enemies teleport, that's your connection. Fix the first with a faster drive, and the second with the tools on this site.
